Union Health Ministry Launches JANANI Digital Platform

In a major push towards digitising public healthcare delivery, the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday launched JANANI, a comprehensive digital platform aimed at strengthening maternal and child healthcare services through seamless beneficiary tracking, interoperable health records and real-time monitoring.

Launched during the National Summit on Innovation and Inclusivity: Best Practices Shaping India’s Health Future, JANANI, short for Journey of Antenatal, Natal and Neonatal Integrated Care, has been designed as an upgraded version of the existing Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) portal.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the platform will create longitudinal digital health records for women during their reproductive years by capturing service delivery events across the continuum of care.

The platform will enable end-to-end monitoring of maternal and child healthcare services, including antenatal care, delivery preparedness, institutional delivery, postnatal care, newborn care, home-based newborn and young child care, as well as family planning services.

“The platform ensures continuity of care at every stage by enabling timely interventions and seamless monitoring of beneficiaries,” the ministry said in a statement.

A key feature of JANANI is the rollout of QR-enabled digital Mother and Child Health (MCH) cards, which will provide portability and easy access to health records across healthcare facilities nationwide.

The platform also incorporates automated alerts for high-risk pregnancies, real-time dashboards for supervisory review and due-list generation for frontline health workers, aimed at improving timely tracking and targeted interventions.

JANANI has been built with interoperability features that allow integration with national digital health platforms such as U-WIN and POSHAN, enabling seamless data exchange and coordination across healthcare and nutrition programmes.

Beneficiaries can register using unique identifiers, including ABHA IDs, Aadhaar-based OTP and biometric authentication, as well as mobile numbers. The ministry said the platform’s pan-India search functionality will help ensure continuity of care for migratory populations while reducing duplication of records.

The system also offers self-registration facilities through web and mobile platforms, allowing beneficiaries to access digital MCH cards, locate nearby healthcare facilities, check expected place of delivery and receive health and nutritional guidance.

Calling JANANI a “structural reform” in maternal and child health administration, the ministry said the platform combines digital authentication, real-time monitoring and inter-sectoral convergence to improve healthcare coverage, accountability and long-term maternal and child health outcomes.

As of now, JANANI has recorded 1.34 crore beneficiary registrations, including over 30 lakh registrations of pregnant women. More than 30 lakh digital MCH cards have been generated, while over one lakh biometric verifications have been completed, according to the ministry.

The launch of JANANI comes as the government continues to expand digital public infrastructure in healthcare, with a focus on improving accessibility, continuity of care and data-driven service delivery in maternal and child health programmes across the country.
