IndiaAI, the Government of India’s flagship artificial intelligence initiative under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to accelerate the adoption of responsible AI in India’s healthcare ecosystem.

The collaboration aims to strengthen healthcare delivery and biomedical research through scalable and ethical AI applications, while building a nationally integrated framework for AI-driven healthcare innovation.

According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the partnership will combine IndiaAI’s technology infrastructure and ecosystem capabilities with ICMR’s expertise in biomedical research and public health. The two institutions will work together to create interoperable AI systems capable of supporting research, diagnostics, disease surveillance, and public healthcare delivery.

As part of the collaboration, ICMR will contribute anonymised and ethics-approved health research datasets, AI models, and toolkits developed under its Medical Information Data for AI Solutions (MIDAS) framework to IndiaAI’s AIKosh platform. The move is expected to improve access to high-quality biomedical datasets for researchers, startups, and innovators working in the healthcare AI segment.

IndiaAI, in turn, will provide ICMR access to GPU-based and high-performance computing infrastructure at subsidised rates under defined service-level agreements. Industry experts believe the availability of affordable compute infrastructure could help address one of the biggest bottlenecks in scaling advanced AI research and deployment in India’s healthcare sector.

The partnership will also focus on developing AI-led healthcare solutions targeting priority public health challenges. These use cases will be built using ICMR’s disease burden and medical research data, supported by IndiaAI’s AI infrastructure and technology stack.

The MoU builds on the growing collaboration between the two organisations in global healthcare AI governance initiatives. In September 2025, IndiaAI and ICMR’s National Institute for Research in Digital Health and Data Sciences (NIRDHDS) were recognised as Pioneer Countries under the HealthAI Global Regulatory Network (GRN), a multilateral initiative co-founded with the United Kingdom and Singapore to promote responsible AI governance in healthcare.

Subsequently, IndiaAI, ICMR-NIRDHDS, and HealthAI signed a tripartite agreement to operationalise frameworks for ethical and responsible AI adoption in healthcare systems.

The latest collaboration is expected to boost innovation at the intersection of healthcare and technology, while ensuring adherence to ethical standards, data privacy norms, and regulatory safeguards.
